Maybe you’ve hired a pro (hi!) or maybe you’ve just got a friend and a camera phone, either way, we’ve got tips for you!

What to Wear

Neckline: Collars are classic, v-necks are flattering, and asymmetrical necklines are some of my favorites.

Colors: Most colors look great (even basic white or black). Avoid bright colors that cast color onto your skin. Neutrals are also timeless.

Patterns: Large patterns read better than tiny patterns. Solids are also 100% ok!

Getting camera ready

Haircuts: Don't get a haircut right before a shoot (do it 1-2 weeks in advance).

Glasses: Avoid wearing Transitions lenses on the day of your shoot. If you always wear glasses, leave them on, otherwise take them off 20 minutes beforehand so there aren't indentations on your nose.

Sleep and Hydration: A few days before the shoot, be sure to get enough sleep and drink a ton of water! Be sure to moisturize/SPF your face too.

Right before your shoot

Swing by a mirror and…

-check your teeth and nose

-dab face oil and/or powder your face

-smooth your eyebrow hairs

-hairspray flyaways

-touchup makeup

-lint roll your shirt

The very lucky amongst us have a pro stylist onsite who can take care of all of this for us. If not, I usually throw a lint roller and hairspray in my bag to have on hand. You can do this too!

On the shoot

Work all your angles: Capture each side of your face plus a straight-on angle. Try sitting and standing. Try leaning forward on your knees if you’re sitting. If you’re standing, shift your weight to one foot.

Relax: Get your giggles out. Roll your shoulders. Tell the photographer you need a break when your cheeks get tired. Think happy thoughts. You got this.

Best honest with feedback: when reviewing shots with your photographer, it’s important to tell them what you love and hate. Usually I’ll take a few shots, review with you, and then shoot a few more. That way we can figure out what angles you like best, if your hair is looking good, or how you want to smile.

Maximizing hiring a professional photographer

Professional photography is an investment. Adding on team photos, office shots or product shots can add a lot of value to a session. If you're personally hiring a photographer, consider doing family portraits during the same session. Just make sure you discuss your desires beforehand so there is enough time and budget to do it all, and make sure you actually upload and use your photos across platforms.
